What makes a good icebreaker question for work?

A good work icebreaker is open-ended, quick to answer and safe to share with colleagues. It invites a story or opinion without asking about salary, health, relationships or politics. Questions about first jobs, favorite tools, small wins or dream offsites help people connect, and nobody feels put on the spot.

What is a good 5-minute icebreaker for a meeting?

Run a round robin: draw one question, and everyone answers in turn in about 30 seconds. "What is one thing that always makes your workday better?" or "What is the view from your window right now?" both work for in-person and video meetings. Keep it optional to pass, move in a fixed order, and start the agenda on time.

How to run icebreakers on Zoom, Meet or Teams

To run icebreakers on a video call, share this page in Room mode so the question is big and readable, then call on people in a fixed order.

  2. Turn on Room mode and share your screen.
  3. Call names in alphabetical order so nobody waits to be picked.
  4. Tap Next card after everyone has answered.
